Dr. Drew Discusses Potential Congressional Run Against Adam Schiff: ‘I Am Morally Moved’

Dr. Drew Pinsky is “ruminating” about a potential political run for office in an effort to get Rep. Adam Schiff to “start participating” in running his California district.

The addiction medicine specialist and practicing physician, known as Dr. Drew, has been moved by alarming conditions in Southern California to consider doing something, possibly waging a campaign against the 10-term Democratic lawmaker who chairs the House Intelligence Committee.

Pinsky admitted to The Hill that he’s “very moderate” and would likely run as a Democrat in the state’s “jungle primary” if he decided to go through with running against Schiff who represents Pasadena, where the former “Loveline” host has lived for two decades.

“I wake up every day and drive through this town and I am morally moved where I feel like I have to do something,” Pinsky said, lamenting that the government in the state, and in Los Angeles County, in particular, is “not functioning.”

“We have people literally dying in our streets,” he said, again drawing attention to the homelessness crisis in California which he has blamed directly on failed Democratic policies.

“People have sort of been swirling around me, going, ‘Oh, you should run for mayor.’ Well, I didn’t really want that job. ‘Well, you should run for governor.’ Well, that’s not really possible. So I was sort of thinking about these things,” Pinsky told the outlet.

“I was watching all the impeachment proceedings and I was going, ‘oh my God, our Congress is tied up and we’re dying out here in California. What are these people doing?’” he added.

And while he felt compelled to do something politically, the 61-year-old celebrity doctor and father of three is not ready to take the plunge yet, though Schiff’s apparent abandonment of his district gave him food for thought.

“I thought, ‘oh my God, I have to run for that office at least just to get him to start participating in the governance of this region,’” Pinsky said.

“Believe me, I don’t want to,” he added. “I’d have to change my whole life, and I’m not really prepared to do that just yet,”

The “Ask Dr. Drew” host has frequently spoken out about the California crisis, warning of a deadly epidemic that could strike Los Angeles, while also remarking that liberal politicians are “disgustingly negligent” about the situation.

President Trump has also targeted California Democrats, rebuking Schiff, Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom as well as House Speaker Nancy Pelosi over her San Francisco district.

Pinsky spoke about homelessness and drug abuse at a mental health summit at the White House last month.

Pinsky was asked how he would respond to those who might roll their eyes at the prospect of another famous name running for political office.

“I would say my eyes are rolling, too. I’d rather not be here. Point me in another direction where we can help the citizens of California, please. I’m all ears,” he told The Hill.

“But the fact that I keep thinking about it tells me how profound the problems are, that I feel obliged to maybe turn my life upside down just to get things governed out here,” he added. “I am constantly morally mobilized because of the condition of what’s going on here in California.”
